In 1998, the Sports Boosters created a new organization with revised articles of association and a new mission statement. This was followed with a Master Plan for the Athletic facilities, which involved all the coaches, the parents, the school administration and the School District. The Master Plan was presented to the Palo Alto School Board by Fran Codispoti and Bob Cranmer-Brown and officially approved in 1999.
The first project was the upgraded track, which was spearheaded by Jim and Debbi Boyd. Fundraising started in 1998 and completed in September 2000. There were 341 donations for a total of $269,634, an average of $790. We also received $50,000 from the School District and raised another $52,934 with fund raising events that included a dinner at Fremont Hills Country Club and two Clash of the Titans auctions in 1998 and 1999. The total raised was $372,568.
At the opening ceremony of the Hal Daner track in October 2000, Daner said “My fondest wish was that this would not end up as a memorial track”.
In November 2000 we moved forward with the next phase of the Master Plan, which included lights and artificial turf for the football field, an improved baseball field, a new soccer field, a second gymnasium, and an aquatic center. The project for the football field lights was managed by Cindy Ziebelman and these were installed next. Under the constant encouragement of Peggy Esber and Nancy Hughes, we eventually raised $280,000 over eight years to provide the funds to design the aquatic center and have the design approved ahead of the Bond Measure A that provided the money. The contract to build the aquatic center was signed six days after the Bond Measure was approved in the election. Jim Geers headed up the second gymnasium project which was also approved by the same Bond Measure.
